Autism is a disorder of brain development that occurs in the
first three years of life.
Children diagnosed as autistic exhibit deficits in
communication and social interaction, they do not play like
typical children and frequently exhibit highly repetitive
and stereotypical behaviors. These skill deficits cause
autistic children to fall farther and farther behind their
typical peers as they grow older.
Children with autism do not learn in the same way that
children normally learn
because they lack the skills
necessary to acquire and process basic information. Despite
the disruption of typical learning processes, behavioral
scientists have used the principles and procedures of
learning theory to develop effective treatment strategies
for teaching children with autism. This approach is known as
Applied Behavior Analysis or ABA.
ABA
therapy is not new
as it is based on more than 50 years of scientific
investigation with individuals affected by a wide range of
behavioral and developmental disorders.
Since the early 1960’s, research has shown that behavioral
interventions greatly reduce disruptive behaviors typically
observed in autistic individuals (self-injury, tantrums,
non-compliance, self-stimulation). ABA has also been shown
to be effective in teaching complex communication, social,
play and self-help skills.
